Gary Mankin

Recording Engineer & Producer

I'm a freelance recording and mastering engineer and producer based in San Francisco. I've made hundreds of CDs/records over the past 30+ years in a plethora of styles. Many of my clients have commented on how I've helped them polish their performances in the studio, whether I was producing or "merely" engineering for them.

When you hire me you get more than just an engineer and/or producer: I bring to my sessions extra equipment that enhances the recording process. This includes highly prized tube condenser microphones from Neumann, AKG and modern boutique builders, as well as state-of-the-art microphone preamplifiers and equalizers, signal processing gear and more.

I have a private studio which is ideal for overdubs and mixing at an economical rate, plus relationships with many of the best large studios in the Bay Area for basic tracking. I’ve been mastering projects that I’ve recorded, as well as many recorded elsewhere, for over a decade.

If you are in the midst of a recording project that you’ve done yourself, or perhaps with a studio or engineer whom you’re not sure can make the most of it, consider having me mix it for you. I can do so economically, due to my private studio. And of course I have decades of mixing experience. If you’ve completed a project and are looking for someone to give it that final coat of polish, contact me about mastering.

I'm proud to say that many musicians have chosen me to record multiple albums with them. I’m particularly proud that five CD’s that I recorded and mixed have been nominated for Grammy awards. Please go to my Clients page to see and hear some of these projects.

Also, recently I have been mixing the music for the KRCB (PBS) television show “Live from the Freight and Salvage,” showcasing performers from the venerable Berkeley nightclub. So far, it is not available on the web, only when broadcast on station KRCB.
